Dear Dr.
Joseph Banks,
We at
Production Services at the Caine College of the Arts believe in the unique
power of the arts to celebrate, illuminate, transform, and inspire the human
spirit. In order to fulfill our mission, we have seen a growing need for a
Social Media internship within our department. We propose the formulation of an
internship and request that University credit be given to the undergraduate
student selected for this position. We request that the Jon M. Huntsman School
of Business offer four credit hours to the intern. The creation of this
internship would give practical experience to a deserving and capable student,
promote interdepartmental communication, and increase participation in
school events.
As
the creation of this internship would foster the acquisition and use of modern
skills, we can see that the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business would be
interested in funding such a project. A business student would be able to gain
practical experience in working with an organization. As that is the purpose of
an internship, this arrangement would benefit both colleges at Utah State
University.
There are
many events performed and hosted by the Caine College of the Arts every year.
Disappointingly, however, most are not attended to full capacity. We have seen
a genuine interest in students to attend these events and support their fellow
students, yet, there has not been an adequate effort made to inform them of the
details necessary to attend these events. The creation of this internship would
alleviate this problem.
One of
the main goals of the school of business is to "be a career accelerator
for our students." Students at the School of Business need
opportunities to gain internship experience. Research conducted surrounding
internships suggests that 77% of employers prefer to hire someone who has done
work as an intern. A Social Media Internship would accelerate the ability to
find a viable career for a student.
As
placement rates after graduation increase, so do student satisfaction rates and
their likelihood to donate funds to the college in the future. It is in the
School of Business’s best interest, both short and long term to offer
this internship credit to a business student.
In
creating this internship we, The Caine College of the Arts will provide the
necessary workspace. This will include a desk with a computer, along with many
other resources. Denise Albiston, Marketing Director, will be the supervisor
over this position. We expect to offer this internship for a period of two
semesters. Following the initial internship, and depending on the success we
also expect to create a second position. With the creation of this internship
we are sure to increase student knowledge, attendance, and support through
social media while providing meaningful experience to a deserving business
undergraduate.
Production
Services at Caine College of the Arts “adopts innovative financial models and
practices responsible stewardship of resources.” We are a dependable
organization and have maintained a respectable reputation among the colleges
here at Utah State University. Our concerts, exhibits, and theater performances
are among the best in the country and consistently receive awards.
This
Social Media Internship would help us to reach a broader community of attendees
and donors. Students from all colleges would be better engaged in the arts if
they were better informed of the events hosted on campus. The Social Media
Intern would create and maintain a Facebook page and Twitter account in
behalf of Production Services for Caine College of the Arts. Students could
then be notified of upcoming events and would be more likely to participate in
them.
If funded
by the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business, this project would be supervised by
Denise Albiston, Marketing Director for Production Services.
Our
request that four credit hours be awarded to the intern is based on the
standard found in Utah State University’s catalog that suggests internships be
awarded one credit hour for every 75 hours of work up to a maximum of six
credits per semester. Working for twenty hours per week for fifteen weeks,
would satisfy that requirement.
Please
contact me, Jeff Counts, Director of Production Services, if you have
questions, would like more details, or would like to set up a meeting regarding
this internship. I look forward to working alongside you as we help the
students at Utah State University progress academically and professionally.
Thank you,
Jeff Counts

I don't see what the CoB is getting out of this deal. While you state that internship is good for the student and helps them find work after. Which in turn makes them happier and more likely to donate, I don't see a real benefit to the CoB, just the student. Why couldn't the Arts offer credits for this to its own students? Wouldn't it make more sense to get a Communications student from the Humanities for this position?
ReplyDeleteI guess I didn't understand the premise of the request. Sorry.
I also don't understand this proposal. Why would the Cain College of the Arts would go to the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business for this internship opportunity? Why doesn't the C.C.A. (Cain College of the Arts) use this internship for their OWN students. I guess I am just confused on why this internship is going though the Business School instead of the Cain College of the Arts.
ReplyDeleteI thought your proposal was fantastic. It is possible I understand it more because I heard your presentation. It was well organized and I like how you cited your sources and provided a cover letter. I think it helped show you as a more credible entity and showed your professionalism that much more.
ReplyDeleteI understand where the confusion is coming from as far as turning to the Business school for the internship opportunity. But, like Jessica, after hearing your presentation I was able to understand and better internalize the relationship between the two colleges. As an old member of the CCA I think this proposal is a great idea. They have many events, performances and activities for their students to be involved in but they are not aware of them. By proposing this you are giving opportunities to students within both colleges and causing them to work together.
ReplyDeleteI think this idea is a big eye opener. Your technical writing is professional and has good flow. You remain concise and clear with your words throughout the entire paper. I like the idea of doing a proposal in regards to Utah State. It can be related to the many opportunities students are not always aware of. Where you state, "This Social Media Internship would help us to reach a broader community of attendees and donors." Shows them the benefits of the exchange and helps provide your proposal with validity. I found this to be well written, and also well communicated in class. I look forward to seeing your press release this coming week.
ReplyDeleteAs an art major, I really appreciate this proposal. Coming into school here at Utah State, I planned on starting out as a Public Relations major minoring in art but then switched. I really appreciate Social Media and would love to be able to have the opportunity to intern as a for the College of the Arts.
ReplyDeleteAs for the proposal as a whole, the paper is well written and you state everything and make it very clear.
I really enjoyed reading this proposal. The way you delivered it was very organized and well written. Joining two of the universities top colleges is a great idea as this proposal seems very logical. I was a little confused in the presentation however this written proposal has laid everything out that I had questions about. This is seriously a great idea and I cannot wait to see how it plays out and how the press release turns out. Awesome job guys!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved the way this proposal flows. It is constructed with great thought and apparent the quality and time spent researching your exchange idea. The one thing I am wondering about is your budget. How are you going to fund this idea? Is there any exchange of money involved? Would the intern position be offered to the public for anyone to apply for this internship or just within Utah State University? Overall, excellent job. Articulated to perfection and very clean, with easy to follow exchange of ideas just might set this proposal into action. The cited sources make a great contribution to a well researched exchange. Presented by a cover letter, this proposal is a professional, pristine package.
ReplyDeleteI think this proposal was very well put together. I enjoyed the overall feel of this proposal. I think this is a great idea. I have personal experience with having a hard time finding a good internship. I think this will be an opportunity for many students and for years to come. I think you will need to sell this a little more. You have to make this seem to be beneficial for the university and the student. This will look great on the resume and it will also forever benefit your university. Great job.
